Recording Studio Samples
Here are a few examples of
recording artists I work with and assist with production and arrangements;
additional melody and rhythmic tracks that are added to enhance the emotional
intent and power of the
original song or composition. It's a process where the artist and producer work
together to explore
the possibilities and arrive on the most effective and creative conclusion.
Sometimes it is simple and
transparent, and at other times more powerful and complex; any addition, I
believe, should reflect the
artist's intent and not the producer's individual preferences. A musician first
learns all the notes he
or she can play, and then, hopefully, learns what to leave out.
A brief technical note:
The recorded samples you will hear below are only a shadow
of the actual recordings. These samples have been greatly reduced in size
and quality in an attempt to both be small enough to be easily downloaded, and
also to hopefully sound half decent on the typical cheesy computer speakers. The
difference is like seeing a postcard versus really being there; the original
recordings are much more detailed, broader and deeper in breadth and depth,
warmer and more brilliant. Contentwise, the songs themselves are all beautiful
and creative works; while we can only share a brief piece of each one below, the
complete songs are pretty wonderful.
Sample #1) Kimri Girl Artist: Bobby Wynn
Bobby Wynn is perhaps the most talented 12 string guitarist in western North
Carolina and for some
distance beyond; this is the opening instrumental piece from his CD "Distant
Shore" that we recorded in 2006. The original piece was meant as a solo guitar
instrumental; what you hear is what evolved from our collective creative efforts
to expand the unspoken story of the music. Bass guitar, keyboards, percussion
and penny whistle were added.
Sample #2) Voyage of the Dawn Treader Artist: Bobby Wynn
Bobby is also a fine songwriter, and this song, inspired by the C.S. Lewis
Chronicles of Narnia (written
long before the recent movie) has a lot of visual imagery in the words. We began
with Bobby's guitar and vocal; he wanted to achieve an almost cinematic theme
feeling, so we used seagull sounds in the background, in addition to bass
guitar, percussion and various custom created keyboard sounds, including a
distant horn to suggest an eternal quest.
Sample #3) If Only We Had Known Artist:
Randy Smith
Randy Smith is a talented and diverse songwriter, as you'll hear in the next
three samples. This song
had such a strong Beatles influence both in style and lyrics that I went back
and dug out my old Beatles records to study the arrangements in an attempt to do
it justice. We started with guitar, vocal and two harmony parts; bass, drums,
keyboards and special effects were added. In working out the drum arrangement,
the central question was "What would Ringo do?".
Sample #4) Mountain Air Artist: Randy
Smith
Another fine Randy Smith song, this one reminds me both of John Denver and a
touch of the group America. The song was already nicely done with guitar/vocals
by Randy and mandolin/vocals by his wife Sally; a bass guitar and two light
percussion tracks (shaker and tambourine on the choruses) were all it needed to
shine.
Sample #5) What Are You Doing? Artist:
Randy Smith
This romantic song became one of my favorites the first time I heard it; it is a
classic ballad that I
can imagine being played at countless weddings from now on. The original tracks
were guitar/vocal/lead acoustic guitar and harmony vocal. Here at Acoustic
Audio, we added bass, drums and some organ in the background. The words are
beautiful; you should hear the whole song.
The above is only a brief sampling of the production and
arrangement we do at Acoustic Audio; sometimes the creative input is as simple
as suggesting that an existing part/phrase/hook/melody be used again at a
specific point to enhance the message, and sometimes an artist requests more
detailed orchestration. Our creative team has decades of experience in this
field, primarily because it is what we love to do most and best. If you'd like
to work creatively with musicians and recording artist/technicians that really
love their work, give us a call.
